Everyone seem to like Nokia ExpressMusic 5800 as it comes with touch screen UI and rich features that made you keep in touch in every way. Since this unit comes with builtin GPS and the Nokia maps does not really works well, everyone are looking for alternate maps program like Garmin XT that works well with Symbian S60 that just release recently.

Here i wrote a guide on how to install the Garmin and make it works:-

1) First you need to download the following files

Download Garmin XT for Symbian S60 version 5.00.30

Download Malaysia and Singapore maps (this map is unlocked)

Download Support Files (sound files)

Download key gen

2)Extract all the download files into “c:\temp\garmin”

3) Connect your phone to computer via USB connection and select “PC Suite” connection on you phone or you can plug in the memory card direct to computer.

4) Copy the files from “c:\temp\garmin\Garmin Mobile XT v5.00.30 for Symbian\” folder into the root of the memory card.

5) Copy the map file into “\Garmin\” under the memory card.

6) Then you need to activate the Garmin software by using the key gen, you need to find the ID Card under the Garmin program “Setting” –> “System” –> “About”. Write down the ID Card in order to generate the code. Once you get the generated code, paste the code into a notepad and save the filename as SW.UNL. Copy the SW.UNL file into the memory card \Garmin\ folder.

7) Double check the GPS setting whether is used the “Attached/Built-in GPS” under the “Setting” –> “System” –> “Remote GPS”. You notice that you can’t change the setting right? Press on disable button and you will able to see what is the current setting enabled, if the setting is “Attached/Buitl-in GPS” then click enable to activate it.

Mission accomplish, you have Garmin Maps on your Nokia XM5800 so start explorer.

*Please make sure you backup your data with Nokia PC Suite before proceeding with the installation as you might required to reset your unit incase the installation failed.

Youtube on Ubuntu Firefox no sound

This is the worst nightmare as most of the time I listen to music using youtube where you can find tonnes of music ranging from oldiest to 21’s century when using Firefox on Ubuntu can view the video but no sound. Luckily it was just a missing plugin that can be install to get back the sound else will be just wipe off back to windows :(.

Strange thing is you can listen to music using the music player but just aint got sound on firefox, so if you too having the same problem don’t wait just run the command below and you’re on your way to get back the sound:-

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound

After install the package, you need to close the Firefox and re-open back. Previously this packages was named libflashsupport and you can’t install that to the current version 9.0.4.

IE for Ubuntu

Sound kinda wierd to have Internet Explorer to be install on linux distro as we use linux is to run away from M$ world but sometimes have no choice as some of the website or appliances required to use IE, that’s bad. There is a tool call IEs4Linux to helps you install IE into your distro, just choose your distro version and download then install. I show on how to install for Ubuntu as I installed into my Ubuntu 9.0.4 Jaunty Jackalope with problem.

You need to install wine package and cabextract like this:-

sudo apt-get install wine cabextract

Once you done install the wine package and cabextract, you can proceed to download the IEs4linux and start the installation like below:-

tar xvfz ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
cd ies4linux-*

When you run the “./ies4linux” command it will start the gui installation where you can choose which IE version to install then it will download the rest of the package to install automatically, roughly takes about 10 to 15 min depend on your internet speed. That’s end of the installation and you will have your IE shown on the desktop.

Safari 4 beta

Get to know that Apple release Safari 4 browser for public beta from Wing Loon blog and I get hooked on the Top Sites features that look like Aero in Vista. So I grab a copy from here and the file size is about 26 MB, after I install so I going to test it and test on few sites that I used to go on daily basis. I find the loading speed is really fast and does not encounter any issue on any web sites that require java or activeX but there I do found some of the limitation as below

Belkin G+ MIMO router

Last weekend went to AV Future link to sent my main board and the power strip for warranty. They change the power strip on the spot and I’m thinking to get Belkin router too so next time when lightning strike again I don’t have to get another router again as they replace 1 to 1 swap.

So I drove to lowyat after that and get the Belkin G+ MIMO with wireless modem router. I bought it from Viewnet around the Leo’s Cafe there and they giving out RM 5 voucher to dine at Leo’s Cafe if you purchase item from that section area as is it very new section.

I find this modem router are able to give a very good performance when browsing, as previously i was using Zyxel P-661HW was terribly slow now i started to love Belkin.
