Recently my vista display a red cross on the network indicator and I can’t recall what I’ve done or install. Weird thing is my network connection is working fine without any

interruption but the network icon just displaying red cross there is sometimes quite difficult to know if the network is working fine or not.

So I search the Google for any solution to fix it but failed to find any but on the found 1 from Microsoft and it does not provide any solution just ask to ignore the red cross on the network, here is the write-up from Microsoft

To work around this problem, you can safely ignore the red "X" over the connection icon that indicates that the network adapter is disconnected. The connection status is updated correctly even when the connection icon incorrectly displays a red "X."

What a good answer from Microsoft and i think they not going to fix it as Windows 7 is coming…think so. Here is the full article of the write-up.

  1. My Vista 64 does exactly the same thing. This only happened after I did a factory re-install and downloaded the very latest full driver for my HP wireless enabled printer.
I have noticed however that the red cross vanishes after the printer connected tab flashes up. Prior to this the internet connection works perfectly.
It would seem that vista only gives permission of a clear network indicator when the printer is brought on line and not when the internet is connected. Prior to the factory re-instal I had my printer disconnected from the network and there was no problem.

  2. Yup, it does not really do much affect on the network connectivity but just displaying red cross and the good thing is the indicator fixed it itself without me doing anything, wierd.

Now I’m testing on the Windows 7 RC1. Btw thanks for the advice.

  3. I saw this problem only started happening after the most recent Windows Update I did. Before that (only about 2 or 3 days ago) everything was working correctly.

I’m running Vista Home Premium on this laptop.

So it looks like Microsoft has migrated the problem to additional machines…

  4. I also have the same red cross appearing problem in Vista Ultimate. And also my windows explore and some other applications(network related like IDM) are not working. Any one has that experiences? Or solved that problem?
    Thank you in advance.
