Get to know that Apple release Safari 4 browser for public beta from Wing Loon blog and I get hooked on the Top Sites features that look like Aero in Vista. So I grab a copy from here and the file size is about 26 MB, after I install so I going to test it and test on few sites that I used to go on daily basis. I find the loading speed is really fast and does not encounter any issue on any web sites that require java or activeX but there I do found some of the limitation as below
1) The memory being used is very high as when the safari loads up it already takes up around 30 MB and when you start to open about 4 tabs it consume 197 MB. A bit strange that it will generate 2 safari process (as shown picture below) so total up it takes about 256 MB, its abit too much on memory usage and I’m not sure whether it detect the system memory and adjust from there but I’ll try to get a low end machine to test on it.
2) I’m using quite a lot on www.logmein.com web site as to be system engineer, we need to do troubleshooting when problem arise and it can saves a lot of traveling time if the problem can be solve easily, right? All the while I’m using IE rather than Mozilla as Firefox have some issue where the screen size does not resize fit to the browser page instead you need to scroll up and down the screen and it’s really annoying to do that but IE is just perfect that is fits well. Too bad to said that Safari also having the problem as Firefox with the screen fitting on the browser.
3) Another issue that I face that is does not able to integrate with Kaspersky Pop-up blocker as I have Kaspersky workstation AV and it comes with pop-up blocker protection and it just does not able to block those pop-up from safari. Strange thing is the built-in pop-up blocker seem to be not really working but it seem to be good also as some of the web site I used to go always seem block by pop-up blocker and safari just do nothing.
There is other features that are great that you no need to worried about plug-in as it able to take care about it and one of the feature that I get hooked is the History Search so you can search all the browsing history with a preview of the page. You can scroll left or right to go through the history and the display is awesome similar with Windows 3D flip but it’s more like IPhone interface. There are about 150 more features available, please check out apple website for more info.
Can’t wait on the final release and hope it will able to optimize the memory usage and it can be used in low end machine. Will try out all the features and give you guys and update on it, back to testing.. 🙂
