I’m been trying to send photo from my phone to my laptop using the built-in bluetooth software that comes with Ubuntu 9.10 but it does not support receiving files, what a frustration. So i do a little google and found a tool that make wonders with just minor setting, the software call Blueman Bluetooth Manager.

Blueman is a GTK+ Bluetooth Manager.Blueman is designed to provide simple, yet effective means for controlling BlueZ API and simplifying bluetooth tasks such as:

Connecting to 3G/EDGE/GPRS via dial-up

Connecting to/Creating bluetooth networks

Connecting to input devices

Connecting to audio devices

Sending/Receiving/Browsing files via OBEX

Pairing

Blueman also integrates with Network Manager 0.7, so any Dialup/Network connections will be made available (via HAL) to Network Manager.

The installation is just way to simple and type the following and viola, you’re done.

sudo apt-get install blueman

I’ve not yet try using it to connect to internet via my 3G but will try it soon.

ForensIT does a great job by providing such a great tool for free that ease IT Administrator job on doing profile migration when doing domain migration especially changing from different domain but remain back user old profile.

I use this tool recently on few domain migration project that would need to use a week or more for migrating user profile but with this Profwiz we takes about 2 days to complete migrate 40 workstations to new domain.

I write a mini how-to on this great tool Profwiz that can help reduce migration times as below:-

1) Identify the user profile location which needs to migrate the profile. To check, right click on the “Start” button and press “Explorer” where it shows you the exact location of the current user profile. Noted that as you need to select which profile that need to be migrated to new domain.

2) Then change your DNS setting to point to the new AD as you needed when you joining to new domain.

3) Un-join workstation from the old domain to workgroup.

4) Login to local pc administrator and join to the new domain.

5) After joining to new domain, do not login using user account but use the domain administrator account to login. After that run the profwiz program to migrate the old profile into the new domain profile.

6) Download and run the profwiz from any location from the workstation and you can see the following screen:-

Click “Next” to start the wizard

Select “Local Computer” as you running the program from local workstation, there is an option to run the program remotely but you need to know the actual profile.

Here you can select the domain that just joined and key in the new user profile on the new domain.

From here you select the profile that you have identified in step 1.

Highlight the profile and click “Next” to start the migration.

It will take about 10 to 20 minutes depend on how data you have on your profile.

Click “Next” to continue

That’s end of the migration and click “Finish” to end the wizard, then you can logoff and login to the new domain with the profiles restored.

I was looking ways to share 2 pc’s with a single keyboard & mouse, but not mean using the KVM switch that sharing the keyboard, mouse and monitor where still having 2 monitors. I need this because from time to time, we need to do workshop where I need to show something on the demo pc and slide on the notebook.

Currently what I do is, I VNC to the demo pc to control the keyboard & mouse movement. As you all know that when using VNC the screen resolution will affect the size of the screen where you need to scroll up and down or left to right thus very annoying. Previously I got to know a software call Synergy that works on multi platform but I’m having trouble configuring it end up giving up.

Today I try again to configure this piece of software and manage to get it up as the documentation was a bit confusing for the first time until you try it out then you will know. Here I wrote a simple steps to help out if you need to use this software and the current version that I download is version 1.3.1,

1) Download Synergy software here and install as usual.

2) After install, double click the Synergy shortcut on the desktop and you can see the screenshot below

3) Click “Share this computer keyboard….” if this is the pc that going to be master, then click on “Configure” button.

4) Click on the “+” button to add the computer that is participate on the sharing as from the screenshot above you can see that the “Screens” box having 2 computer name. You need to type in the computer name for the pc that need to be shared else the connection will be failed.

5) On the “Links” box, you need to specify which screen position refer to which screen. As you can see from the screenshot above, that I have specify for both pc right. Yes you need to specify both master and slave screen setting here else you can move your mouse over to the other pc but you can get your mouse back to your original pc. On my first try i didn’t set that and I can’t get my mouse back to my notebook and if you face that problem as well, just quit the application and your back on your pc.

So that is all the configuration that required and its pretty simple. But how about the slave pc? any setting need to be configured? For the slave pc, you just need to install the same program into the pc then launch Synergy application and select “Use other computer shared….” and type in the master pc name then click “start” button.

Forget to mention that this piece of software is OpenSource so its free to use.

Have you ever encounter Explorer, MSN and some other application crash due to unknown reason and it keep on crashing even you tried to restart few times. I encounter this on Vista after installed with SP2 but this happen to Vista Home as I was setting up 2 new dell notebook for my friends.

First I thought will be the MSN issue as it was the first application that crash then follow by others. So this could not be the problem with MSN and after checking is due to DEP that causing it, I try to disable on the My Computer but on Vista does not have that option.

Below is how you can disable DEP on vista :-

1. Click Start
2. Click All Programs
3. Click Accessories
4. Right Click on Command Prompt
5. Left click on Run as Administrator
6. Click the Allow button if it asks you for permission
7. Type or copy and paste this into the command prompt window:

    bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

8. Hit enter and you should see the confirmation: Operation Completed Successfully
9. Reboot and DEP should be off.

Have you encounter problem installing application to your XM5800 where it prompt "certificate expired" or something, this happen to every application you tried to install. The only way to resolve this is by reset your phone back to factory default setting, so how are you going to do that?

I’ll provide the steps as follow and there is also a lot of guide available on the net and I just create my own for my reference as well. Rule of thumb before doing any factory reset or formatting, please do backup all your important data from your phone via Nokia pc suite and also remove your memory card from the phone slot before resetting.

1) Remove the memory card from the phone slot, press the power button and select "Remove E:" and on your left hand bottom there is where your memory card located. Remove the slot cover and press the memory card as this will eject the memory card out.

2) Now press on your dialer "*#7370#" this will prompt you "Restore all original phone settings? This will restart" and press "Yes" to continue.

3) Your phone will be reset and restart with original setting where you need to set some basic setting like time and date, language and so on…

4) You can plug back the memory card into the memory slot then you can install your favorite application without problem.

The steps is quite easy and only problem you need to backup and restore all the data back, hopefully this problem does not happen all the times. Since after you have reset and not install much application, you can consider to upgrade the firmware as well if you don’t have the latest firmware. To check the firmware version on your phone, press "*#0000#" and you can see something like below:-

If your version is lower than the image above, you can update by pressing the "Options" button and press "Check for updates" this will check for updates and download the latest version into your phone. Then you have option to upgrade the existing version and will restart your phone. I did encounter that i need to power off and on few times to have successfully upgrade the firmware. Alternative you can download the firmware updater from Nokia website and upgrade via Nokia application updater using USB connection.

Its a tired long day for today as I spend almost half a day to setup the Squid-2.6 in transparent mode with squidGuard and I think most of you will think that I’m that dumb takes so long to configure that. It’s a very good experience to learn that you always need to keep up to the latest update on Linux as if you have stopped playing with it you will loose out.

That’s why it took me so long till I found out what’s the problem. First there was problem with squidGuard that all the configuration was done perfectly but the filtering was not working, end up manage to find the problem was the blacklist was not build with .db format. Second problem was the new Squid configuration for transparent mode was different from the older version and much more simpler. Below I write up all the steps to configure transparent proxy with squidGuard.

Pre-requisite : Squid-2.6, squidGuard-1.4 and iptables

1) Squid and iptables can be installed from the distro cd media, I’ll assume you have already done so.

2) Download squidGuard from here, unpack the package after finish download and do the installation as follow:-

cd squidGuard-1.2.0
./configure
make
make install

3) After done the installation, now you need to download the blacklist file and I have do a small script to download the blacklist and update into the db folder. Copy the following and paste into a new file, save the file and change the file mode to 777 by “chmod 777 <filename>”.

cd /usr/local/squidGuard/db/
rm -f /usr/local/squidGuard/db/blacklists.tgz
wget -c http://squidguard.mesd.k12.or.us/blacklists.tgz
rm -rfv /usr/local/squidGuard/db/blacklist/*
tar xvfz /usr/local/squidGuard/db/blacklists.tgz
/usr/local/bin/squidGuard -C all
chown -R squid.squid /usr/local/squidGuard/db/blacklists/*

You need to configured the squidGuard.conf before you can use the squidGuard, here is a sample of the squidGuard.conf configuration file for your reference.

4) Just execute “./<filename>” to download the blacklist and update the blacklist database. You also can schedule this script to run weekly to update the blacklist database via crond.

5) After done the SquidGuard installation we proceed to configure the Squid to enable the SquidGuard filter and add the following

redirect_program /usr/local/bin/squidGuard -c /usr/local/squidGuard/squidGuard.conf

at the end of the squid.conf file.

6) Then look for the line contain “http_port 3128” and add “transparent” behind as below

“http_port 3128 transparent”

this is how it enable the transparent proxy for the new squid version. Save the file and reload the squid using the following command

/sbin/service squid reload

7) The transparent proxy would not successful without add a firewall rules in the iptables as below

$IPTABLES -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp –dport 80 -j REDIRECT –to-port 3128

change the “eth0” according to your network interface and add other firewall rules that required but I would not cover it here as it depend on your network environment. Make sure you have put the above line into “/etc/rc.local” so everytime the system boot up will have the iptables rules enabled.

Here we have completed on the Squid Transparent Proxy with SquidGuard successfully configured.

About 2 months ago my mainboard was strike by lightning and can’t find the new mainboard for the old processor AMD Athlon 64 poor old thing. So now left on the casing is the DVD-RW and 3 hard disk, not worth for me to invest another new processor and mainboard as the desktop mainly for watching and download movies.

So I plan to buy 3 SATA/IDE to USB converter to hookup my 3 hard disk, but those converter need to use external power source to power the hard disk and if you have 3 set then you have to use 3 power point that will be mess with cables. Good if you still have the old AT power supply where you can turn on and off the power supply by the switch.

And I don’t have any old AT power supply so I Google and see if there is any guide on turning on ATX power supply without mainboard and viola found some guide on doing that and it was really really simple. Thanks to all the guide out there and it really helpful, below is how to do it.

To turn on an ATX power supply that isn’t connected to a motherboard use a wire or paper clip to short the green wire (PS_ON) to any one of the black wires (COM).

Also, be aware that some of the older Dells (older than Dimension 4300) did use proprietary powersupplies that are not wired the same as the ATX standard, even though they will look physically the same.

Have you ever move application path to another location that have more space but after moving it to the new location, your apps services not seem to be able to start. When you try to start your application services the following error appear

There is a short fix for this, you can modify the services path without having to re-install back your apps. To fix, run “Regedit” in “Start Menu” -> “Run” and navigate to the following path

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\[Name of Service]

edit the “ImagePath” key to your new apps locations. You can just fire up the services without having to reboot the server or workstation.

I was given a migration project to migrate Debian mail server to Mdaemon mail server. This project include setting up the Mdaemon mail server and migrate email over 600+ mailbox on Debian mail server, at first this project seem to be very straight forward as from the first meeting with the customer they mention is 90% of the user is using outlook express. This sound like all the email will be store on the client rather than in debian mailserver right? By the time we do the installation only we found out they given us the wrong info, where 90% of the user is using webmail…. !@#$#$%#% .

When I found out that then i know this is not easy man, migrate from webmail to Mdaemon as you all know that webmail store all the email is using Maildir format and not Mbox. If the email store in Mbox format, I can use Mdaemon Multipop to pull the email from Debian mail server and this will much more easier. So the fact now is all the email is store in Maildir and it need to be migrate to Mdaemon, my first plan as follow :-

1) Copy all the email inside Maildir folder that consist of cur, new, tmp folder and paste to mdaemon server
2) Import back into Mdaemon using outlook express

The first plan sound like will work right, but end up with problems. Each of the email inside Maildir file name is too long and when copied over to windows each of the email file name is all same and it can’t be imported. So have to find another solutions and I was thinking to do the following:-

1) Convert Maildir to Mbox format
2) Copy the mbox file to Mdaemon
3) Extract the mbox file into individual emails
4) Import all the emails using outlook express

Second plan sounds good but need to see whether I can find any tools that can do that from the net, and very glad that I manage to find all the tools needed. I found a tools call Maildir to Mbox conversion from here and another tools call Mbox2eml but I have lost the website but I have uploaded the tools here.

Here you can get the manual on how to do the migrations.
