I’m in Mont kiara today, there is so many people having McD for lunch even there is so many article on news paper or magazine stated that fast food is not good for health but still crowded including me. Are we really not conscious about our health factor but still eating it? For me I’m not frequently eating fast food but once a while just get along with friends.

I do notice that most of the customer does not clear their table when leaving, this remind me during our honeymoon in Australia where you need to clean the table mostly everywhere you dine but ofcouse not for restaurant. For Malaysian seem like not practicing this culture and just leave it to the worker to clean up. It might be good too as creating job opportunities for student as part time jobs.

Nowadays fast food is not cheap compare to normal food and bad to your health so think twice next time what to eat.

What is the latest trend in fast food industry? Have you ever heard of Pizza in a cone? I went to Pavillion shopping mall past 2 weekend to walkaround as there have many food that you can find in the food court area. I find this KonoPizza a bit interesting where you have your favorites pizza in cone and you can freely enjoy your pizza while you on the go or window shopping.

This is the latest fast food in town bringing you direct from Italy where you have your pizza on the go. When was your last time you have food on your cone? Mostly cone widely used for ice-cream and do you still remember during the old days my parents used to bring me to cinema at night. During those days is very popular to have Indian selling “Kacang Puteh” and will pack into a paper cone so you can enjoy it during the show.

This concept is very convenient for those who always on the go but sometimes you want to have some pizza and you have no time to dine there, so grab a cone of your favorites pizza while rushing for your busy schedule. If you have not tried it yet, head yourself to Pavillion Mall food court section just opposite the “Food Republic“.

It comes with 2 sizes small and big but I will recommend to take the big one as it was not that really big, just nice for an adult if you are very hungry then this might not be a good choice to had as you might end up eating few cones. Each big cone cost about RM 13.90 and just top-up 1 Ringgit you will entitle a free cup of fresh brew coffee.

If you would like to know what is the actual size of the KonoPizza, take a look on the photo above where I compare it with my mobile phone. The size is just about 2 size of my Sony Ericsson W810i.

Yam Bean a.k.a “Sa Kot” in Cantonese and can be eat it raw as it is very sweet, so using it to boil soup will make the soup delicious. It is easy to boil and its better to use slow cooker to boil it as it need around 3 to 4 hours to boil and the taste is superb. Not sure what is the benefit of this soup but is really delicious even with just a simple ingredient.

1/2 piece of small Sa Kot
3 to 4 pieces of chicken leg
1 piece dry scallop
3 to 4 pieces of dried oyster
1 carrot (chopped to pieces)
Water (put the water reaching almost half of the cooker)
salt to taste

The ingredient above can cater for 3 person and you just need to wash all the ingredient and put into the slow cooker, let it boiled for 3 to 4 hours. When you about to serve just add dash of salt to taste, preferable to use sea salt.

Last week me and my wife plan to cook kim chi noodle for today breakfast as we bought the Kim Chi from Cold Storage supermarket. What makes both of us fall in love with Kim Chi noodle as we have tried it at one of the korean shop in Sunway Pyramid (near the ice skate area). The shop owner is a korean and they really cooks very very nice korean food, quite a lof of korean dine there. Been there twice and having the same dish that is Kim Chi noodles, the soup was so deliciuos with the kim chi and chicken.

The set was comes with rice, 3 side dishes and especially the main dish kim chi soup. From there both of us addicted to korean food and look for Kim Chi to try make it on our own, we go to supermarket to find the Kim Chi and I think most of the supermarket are able to get. The one we bought is in plastic tupperware and is ready cut, my wife friends said some are in packet where whole cabbage uncut.

So how do we cook, we search through google on how to make the kim chi noodle soup and there is a lot of article on how to do it, most of the article almost similar so we use one of the recipe and try it out. Below is the ingredient we use:-

Ingredient

200-250 gm of Kim Chi (ready cut) with the juices
1 cup of water
3 cup broth (i use maggie chicken stock)
3 pcs of garlic minced
cooking oil / olive oil
chicken or beef meat
noodles (prefered to use Tang Hoon (冬粉), ” transparent noodles made from green beans” but i use Vits mee)

Cook method

1. Stir fry the meat with a little oil and garlic until cooked.

2. Add water, broth, chili padi and kim chi. Bring it to boil and stir occationally.

3. Boil the soup a bit longer to make it tastier

4. Add noodle and bring it to boil again on medium heat.

5. Here you go, yummy kim chi soup noodle. Easy and delicious breakfast.

Come to second night in penang, we try out this place in Tanjung Bungah and its quite easy to find if you coming from Batu Ferringhi you will saw the Swimming Pool on your left hand side. Futher up a bit you can see a low cost flat on your right and there is a traffic light there, turn left on that traffic light as you can see a red signboard “Tai Pak Kong Temple” (note that the wording is in mandarin). Go straight in till you see the temple as the restaurant is next to the temple facing the sea.

The view there is not consider very nice but you can enjoy nice food beside the seaside is consider a very good view right… too bad there is no beach for a walk else will be more good feel. Quite surprise that this restaurant have different stall for different kind of food, although all is seafood. We order 3 dishes that is fried lala, kong po mantis shrimp and vege. I miss understood Boon Tau that he mention is steam crab and I thought is mantis shrimp, so order the wrong one but I find all this food so delicious but a bit pricey.

After dinner not much place to go and we went to Batu Ferringhi again to buy some DVD’s , as it selling dirt cheap so what are you waiting for… right. We walk on that street around 1 and half hours then we went to Lorong Baru at the corner there have a lot of food stalls. For easy to find this place, look for Sunway Hotel as is it same row with it. We like the Ho Chien and Popiah there, we been there for 2 nites just for the fried oyster. We pack the fried oyster and drive back to hotel enjoying while relaxing.

The next morning we pack our thing and prepare to back home. Cheah and Alex is one of my customer was around that area and he bring us to Pulau Tikus for breakfast as he was penang lang quite known the nice place.

I had Prawn Mee and order some pan cake as we seldom see on kopitiam selling those. After breakfast we heading back to KL and that’s our trip to penang and hopefully will travel more place to post more good food places.

Special Thanks to:

On the first night in penang, we went to Gurney drive where you can find quite a number of food stalls and its quite popular. Its a bit different compare with the last time we visit as the food there not really as tasty as last time so we just have 1 bowl of asam laksa and prawn mee.

One i like most is “Muar Chee”, is a something like dol dol that mix with blend peanut.

After the dinner at gurney, we went to Batu Feringhi as along the road side infront of the hotels you can see a lot of stalls selling bags, t-shirts, dvds and others. It just like pasar malam but you can’t find stall selling thing to eat.

They next day morning, we went to Wat Chayamangkalaram is it a Siam and Thai temple. Both temple is just across the road and we went in to give some donations for repair works on the buddha statue.

After that we went to Pulau Tikus but its not an island as its just an area they call it Pulau tikus. Not sure why that area is call Pulau Tikus and that’s doesn’t bother us as we just want to find the Mee Mamakat Seng Lee cafe. This mee mamak was introduce by Axian and it caught our eye when it show on tv program so we get the address.

Its not really hard to find this coffee shop as you can see it on the main road of Jalan Burma. Compare with KL mee mamak this one is slightly different on the sauce taste, overall consider tasty. We just order 1 plate to share as we only want to taste it and continue to look for others foods.

Off we go to Kek Lok Si Templebut we didn’t go up to the temple as we been there before. We stop at the pasar for asam laksa as that place is famous for it and we had 2 bowl. The taste is just perfect with the combination of the ingredients that make it delicious.

We walked up to the walkway to the temple as along the walkway there is stalls selling souvenirs, we get some for our friends and we saw one uncle just open for business as we reach there quite early not much people around. Just amazing how long does this uncle takes to take out all the things he sell? see photo below.

I think is a bit small to see here, actually behind Jun is all the things that the uncle going to take out before he can go into the small shop.

to be continue…

The first stop when reach Penang by ferry service is the Fort Cornwallis and the Light house as is it near to the ferry port. Driving distance within 5 minutes where you can saw the cannon and light house. Surprisingly from the man who incharge of the light house said it only open to public recently and not much people aware this light house even the localities dunno about it.

It not really high but both of us not keen to go upstair, but if you got chances should walk up and have a beautiful view to the sea. Fort Cornwallis is an old star-shaped fort and was built by Captain Sir Francis Light in 1786.

After that we go to Komtar not for shopping but searching for Cendol as it recommended by Boon Tau. He is one of my relative best man and he really knows every little ”lubang” in penang for foods. This cendol stall located nearby the pedestrian bridge and look for a hardware shop on your right hand side if you’re coming from komtar building. The cendol stall is behind the hardware shop and you can use the small road beside the hardware shop to access it.

So tasty till my wife does not leave a single drop but if compared to Melaka cendol, I still prefer Melaka one as the Melaka brown sugar taste is very strong and yummy. The price is reasonable as selling at RM 1.60 per bowl and I only notice after I take a photo of the stall that Pua Chu Kang ate there too. We continue after having our starter heading toward the Lorong Selamat via Jalan Burma, in the middle of Lorong Selamat there is a chinese coffee shop and we try the Chow Kuey Teow credit to Boon Tau.

Although this Kuey Teow abit pricey but is comes with 3 big prawn and it taste good.

to be continues…..

We depart from KL around 6:30 and we are using the Guthrie Highway, out from Guthrie toll toward Ipoh around 7:00 am. Traffic on that day is very smooth and reaching Ipoh at 9:00 am for our Dim Sum breakfast at Foh San restaurant, although is weekdays the crowd is still there and is almost full house but no need to wait for queue.

Mostly is elderly enjoying their early tea with a group of friend chatting, we do enjoy seing them so enjoying life with all the laughter and smile among them. Most enjoyment is the food there is tasty and more choice as those dim sum is not commonly saw here.

After breakfast, we depart from Ipoh around 9:45 am heading to Penang our main destination. On our way to Penang, we discuss whether we want to go by ferry as our first time visit is by the Penang Bridge, so we decide to take the ferry instead as i saw on paper few days back that ‘goverment plan to shutdown ferry services when the second bridge build’ not sure if it’s true.

Ferry services is very enjoying as you no need to drive and just wait for the ferry to bring you over plus you can enjoy the beautiful view as the wind breeze through. My dad’s car have chance to abroad ferry for the time..:) it took about 20 min to reach George Town. It just a waste if goverment plan to close down ferry service as it was an historical ferry service, it can be a tourism place or just let our next generation to get a feel it.

I’m going to Penang next Thursday (17-04-08) with my wife for holidays and food finding. Anyone have any nice food to recommend, please feel free to drop some and i will try it out.

This will be our second time stepping into Penang as first visit was on year 2003.I miss some of the food there especially Asam laksa, fried Oyster (ho chian) and etc. How does the Penang name come from? this is what i found in wikipedia

The island was referred to as 檳榔嶼 (Bīnláng Yù) in the navigational drawings used by Admiral Zheng He of Ming-dynasty China in his expeditions to the South Seas in the 15th century. Early Malays called it Pulau Ka-Satu or “First Island”.

The name “Penang” comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means island of the betel nut tree (Areca catechu), family Palmae. In Chinese, Penang is known as 檳城 (pinyin: Bīnchéng / Bīngchéng; Hokkien: Peng Sheah). All three names can refer either to the island of Penang, the state of Penang or sometimes the state capital, George Town.

More specifically, George Town is known as Tanjung in Malay and 喬治市 (Qiáozhì Shì) in Chinese. Penang Island is simply Pulau Pinang (/’pulaʊ ‘pinaŋ/) in Malay and 檳榔嶼 (Bīnláng Xù) in Chinese, and Penang state is Negeri Pulau Pinang in Malay and 檳州 (Bīn Zhōu) in Chinese.

I will post all the photos and all the food we taste when we back…stay tuned.
